Capitol Theater's 1982 Summer Movie Series
Have you ever been to the Bilheimer Capitol Theater in Downtown Clearwater? No???
Well lucky for you, they have countless events this summer available for you to experience. Like the 1982 Summer Movie Series starting this weekend! But first, let me tell you a bit about my own experiences and some of the rich history that makes it such a special part of Clearwater to whet your appetite.
When I was little, my family, my best friend and I took a trip to the Capitol Theater to see the musical movie "Singin' in the Rain." It was my first time there and I loved it! It was so cool to experience that classic movie in such a historic, vintage-feeling venue.
According to the Capitol Theater website, it opened in 1921. It was saved from demolition in 1995 and then saved again from foreclosure in 2009 when the city of Clearwater bought the building and it entered a partnership with Ruth Eckerd Hall. What a lucky little theater! It has hosted a multitude of well-known artists such as B.B. King, Clint Black, Kansas, and The Righteous Brothers.
This is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to its decades of existence. If you're fascinated by history of any kind, this theater is definitely one to Wikipedia search. There's even whispers of it being...haunted. Leave a comment and tell me what you find out!
In more recent years, I have gotten to support friends on the Capitol Theater stage as they brought stories like "The Little Mermaid" and "Bye Bye Birdie" to life. Even just this summer, my family attended a Five for Fighting concert.
Personally what I love about the theater is its size. It is considerably smaller than performance halls like the Straz in Tampa and the Mahaffery in St. Petersburg. Concerts and performances here are much more intimate!
Kudos to you for reading this far. Now for the fun part, announcing the Summer Movie Series movies! Parental guidance is advised, some of these movies may contain mature content. If you're looking for more family-oriented activities, check out our last few Family Friendly Fun blogs!
